The AMA’s House of Delegates (HOD) convened in Chicago, Illinois for its annual meeting in mid-June. The meeting spanned 4 and a half days, following 3 weeks of preparatory caucus meetings. The House addressed a wide range of timely and critical issues currently affecting the U.S. health care system.

Ãå±±½ûµØ was represented at the meeting by Bill David, MD, PhD (delegate), Ileana Howard, MD (alternate delegate), Dan Pierce, MD (young physician delegate), and Rachel Volbrecht, JD (staff liaison). Ãå±±½ûµØ actively participates in the PM&R Caucus, Neuroscience Caucus, and Neurology Section, in addition to the delegates’ regional delegations. Ãå±±½ûµØ applied for and was approved to join the Mobility Caucus, further expanding the range of the delegates’ engagement across relevant specialty areas.

Key policy discussions throughout the meeting included:

CDC Advisory Committee:
The HOD responded to the sudden dismissal and replacement of all members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) by adopting policy for transparency and oversight. Following an emergency resolution, the AMA sent a letter to Senator Bill Cassidy, MD, urging a formal inquiry, and a sign-on letter co-signed by nearly 100 organizations was sent to HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

NIH Restructuring and Funding:
There was considerable testimony regarding the proposed reorganization of the NIH and potential funding cuts for FY 2026. A resolution was directing the AMA to issue a letter outlining these concerns, including the disruption of previously awarded research grants.

Medicaid and Medicare Advocacy:
The HOD reaffirmed the AMA’s commitment to preserving access to Medicaid for patients and continuing its advocacy for meaningful, long-term Medicare physician payment reform.

Additional discussions addressed key issues including reducing administrative burdens associated with prior authorization, protecting physician autonomy from corporate interference, supporting physician well-being, and ensuring health AI development serves both patients and physicians.
